Weights work
Thank goodness women are starting to come to terms with weight lifting and its importance in our lives.
Many years ago women lifting weights was not a part of our exercise routine; it was step aerobics or yoga only. We would occasionally see women lifting 1 -2 kg dumbbells and that was usually when they were out walking with them swinging in their hands. Now days we see women lifting good solid weights, and they are amongst the heavy dumbbell and barbell areas of the gym. Squats are a huge part of many women’s weight workouts as to are the chin ups and bench press.
Finally women realise that lifting and working with heavier weights are an advantage to us not a disadvantage. As a trainer so many women come to me asking for a change in shape – many wanting “spot reduction” (which is NOT possible), but in saying this they say “I don’t want to bulk”. I can assure you as a woman – you will not bulk, you will lean down and look a hell of a lot fitter – if that’s what you inspire to look like. Women do not have the testosterone in our system as this is the make up of a male. Women have oestrogen in our systems which prevent the “bulk” like males. So therefore lifting weights will be a different process and be a longer process to gain the muscle mass like men can.
Women lifting weights help us burn fat better and prevent osteoporosis, the more muscle mass we have in our bodies the better our bodies work at burning calories and prevents gaining weight as easily.
Based on a healthy diet with fresh foods and less processed foods along with at least 2 -3 weight workouts a week, you will find that you can maintain a healthy weight and strong body and work to a lean body.
When a new client comes to me asking for help to lose weight and get fit, the first thing I work with them on is weight training. I start with this to: – build some strength in them to help with the cardio side of training, if I get their legs stronger this will help when they want to start jogging – it helps with their posture so that they don’t walk slumped over putting more presser on their lungs and heart – It helps burn calories better so they lose weight faster than just walking – it speeds up their metabolism to burn foods in their system quicker – not allowing it to turn to fat – And most of all they FEEL strong and FEEL good about themselves.
They don’t ever come last in weight training as they might in a run amongst fitter people, and many times they are actually stronger and can lift more than those around them that are say smaller in body shape.
So the benefits of lifting weights is endless, the more you lift the better you feel and of course the better you feel the better you look – it’s all about SELF ESTEEM!!!
Good luck with your training and start lifting!!!
