Pregnancy and the benefits of magnesium

So many of us are in need of more magnesium, to help with inflammation in our bodies (due to sugar and refined carbohydrates), from the overuse of coffee, processed foods, medication such as birth control, anti depressants and alcohol.

Magnesium is found in foods such as leafy green vegetables and our oily fish, but we still need more supplementation in our world today due to higher levels of stress and toxicity.

Women who are pregnant need magnesium to help with the blood flow – you have nearly doubled your blood when growing a baby inside of you. It helps with muscle joint and pain due again to growing another human inside of you, it helps cellular growth, cell regeneration, hormone function (pre and post), it is good for those restless legs you have after hectic days.
It helps with morning sickness as magnesium helps your hydration levels and when you have morning sickness you can lose a lot of fluid due to not keeping anything down in your system.

It is of such importance for women during their pregnancy and just as much for post pregnancy. The stress you endure with a newborn is right up there and this is where magnesium will help with stress levels, blood sugar levels help with repair on the body (birth is trauma to the body), the amount of blood loss, your body needs to heel in many ways. The stress of coping with a baby – from sleepless nights, to maybe lack of help or support can add stress – even as much as stressing with lactating.

Magnesium is a natural supplement, there is no harmful drugs to cope with, this is something you can discuss with your Naturopath.

Stress is one thing we cannot measure, therefore we do not realise how much we carry around. We can see things like the foods we put in our bodies, how much weight we lift in the gym, how far we run/walk/ride or swim, but we cannot measure how much stress we have on our bodies. This is why having time out, time with friends and natural supplementation is very important to keep ourselves together the best way we can.

If you feel your stress levels are a concern please see a Naturopath to discuss your health concerns and look into some supplements that may be able to assist you.

Take care
