Essential oils

Dr Axe has released his new book Ancient Remedies and in this book he outlines ancient essential oils that help to improve our health, mood and emotions.

I have highlighted what he has mentioned and I highly recommend you have a read and try some of these oils to help your health concerns or concerns of your loved ones.

Lavender :

  • Beneficial for those with anxiety
  • Helps headaches and sleep by simply inhaling
  • Natural antioxidant that can help prevent and reverse disease
  • Calm acne and erase age spots
    (mix 4 drops with ½ teaspoon carrier oil and massage onto skin)
  • Avoid in third trimester of pregnancy

Frankincense :

  • Improves immune system – fights colds, viral and bacterial infections
  • Anti Inflammatory that helps protect the health of your cells
  • Contains anticancer properties – inhibit aggressive cancer cells in breast, bladder and skin cancers
  • Improves memory and learning and improves cognition in those with Alzheimer’s
  • Helps gut related issues, Crohn’s and IBS
  • Improves skin, reduces wrinkles and tightening of the skin

Oregano :

  • Treats respiratory and digestive diseases
  • Helps skin infections, sore throats, wounds and viruses
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine uses it to treat diarrhoea, parasites and fungal infections (athletes’ feet as well).

To use as a natural antibiotic or antiviral, put 4 drops in 1 teaspoon olive oil and take twice a day for ten days (don’t take oregano orally for longer than 14 days).

  • Not for pregnant women’s use at all.

Tea tree :

  • Potent antiviral properties – inhale and help respiratory infections and coughs.
  • Powerful disinfectant
  • Effective for treating skin conditions
  • Ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria and treat fungal infections
  • Ideal for acne (mixed with raw honey this is a great face cleanse)

Peppermint :

  • Most versatile oil, from muscle aches to seasonal allergy symptoms
  • The menthol increases blood flow and produces a cooling sensation.
  • Helps ease migraines (apply to temples)
  • Unclogs sinuses
  • Be careful if pregnant or nursing

Lemon :

  • Decreases stress and anxiety
  • Relieves nausea
  • Supports detoxification
  • Brilliant home cleaning product (add 40 drops of lemon, 20 drops tea tree, fill with water and dash of vinegar in spray bottle)

Rosemary :

  • Cleanse the air and prevent illnesses from spreading
  • Great for your brain to enhance memory and concentration
  • Reduces level of stress hormone cortisol by inhaling (helps with those with adrenal fatigue)
  • This oil contains carnosol, which holds promise for its ability to kill cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells nearby unscathed.
  • Always dilute with a carrier oil when applying topically.

Clary Sage :

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine have used this oil to help strengthen the kidneys, adrenals, and women’s reproductive organs (combine 5 drops of clary sage oil with 5 drops jojoba oil and massage into the abdomen).
  • Helpful for sleep remedies
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Antifungal and antiseptic properties boosts eye, hair, and skin health.
  • Don’t use during or after drinking alcohol, as it can exacerbate alcohol’s sedative effects.

Clove :

  • Ranked number 1 among herbs and spices – per gram cloves contain more antioxidants than blueberries. Which means they have the ability to slow aging by reversing the damages caused by free radicals.
  • Suppress the infection potential of common flu viruses.
  • Helps gum pain
  • Don’t use clove if you are using blood thinners

Holy Basil :

  • Tulsi is known as the plant that is the elixir of life
  • Ayurvedic healers use this oil to help the body adapt to stressful conditions.
  • Works as an adaptogen to help stress.
  • Can counterbalance blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels
  • Bolsters the immune system in a way that may offer protection from cancer
  • Contains eugenol, a potent antimicrobial, which is helpful for skin disorders

Eucalyptus :

  • An Australian favourite that contains eucalyptol, known as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces knee pain after knee surgery
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Improves respiratory conditions, from asthma to common cold as it opens up the nasal passages
  • Decreases coughing fits
  • Great for sore throat – mix with carrier oil and rub on back, neck and chest

Cedarwood :

  • Cedar trees are known for their protection
  • Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and sedative properties
  • Disinfects wounds
  • Promotes good sleep
  • Relieves stress and tension

Grapefruit :

  • This oil boosts metabolism and reduces appetite and encourages your body to burn fat.
  • Inhale direct from bottle or add a couple of drops to your water bottle

Bergamot :

  • Known to build confidence and enhance mood – best oil for depression

Lemongrass :

  • Great for relieving muscle aches and cramps

Vetiver :

  • Relaxing and calming plus helpful to children with attention deficit hyperactivity

All these oils are diffusible and can use with a carrier oil of choice to apply to skin – seek information as to those that cannot be indigested.
